Day 15
Halfway through the 30 day challenge!!
Discipline = Freedom ( If you get this you’ve cracked the code)
7m47s
Stephen king in his book on writing was describing how there’s nothing more frightening than a blank page.
Blank page is pure potentiality, pure yin and therefore is a purely chaotic space.
and he said if you add structure or any discipline at all, it fills the blank space and then allows you to write.
When you have to create within a disciplined structure the creativity flows
The blank space can freeze you up completely (like performance anxiety) What am i going to fill that with?
Similarly you could say there really is no real discipline other than self-discipline … there’s only you, so for most of us all, discipline is self-discipline
What is freedom? If we wanted to offer a sort of a simple answer to that i would say
- plural freedom would be a plurality of options a multiplicity of options
- versus a lack of freedom where you have a singularity of options
I mean if you only have one choice that’s not a choice, that’s a command, it’s a demand, it’s an injunction
and it’s undeniable because you have one choice do this, that’s it
However hard you think it is, add another 25 to 50%, it’s always harder than you think and it always takes longer than you think … don’t let that demotivate you do it anyway.
Freedom is good but it can only come through disciplined consistent action over time, because nobody’s going to give it to you as an adult.
My comment & guess before the video release… fairly close to similar territory of the video..
When I discovered the difference between ‘freedom to’ vs ‘freedom from’, that was a big deal.
Earning ‘freedom to’ is much harder, but also was more freeing and motivating to me.
I got a heart from Grannon, while my past comments have not, but those earlier ones got more likes… whatever these likes, hearts and other virtual stickers really mean??
Freedom to is about having options and choices… you can live in a smaller and smaller world, to get freedom from… but much tougher to get freedom to do things, explore places, have real genuine choices, etc. in the real world and shared reality. That’s where discipline and self-discipline comes into play, if you can’t contain and direct your impulses, will and mind. Your options shrink.
Ohhh…. this part caught my attention while doing summary of transcript above..
I mean if you only have one choice that’s not a choice, that’s a command, it’s a demand, it’s an injunction
and it’s undeniable because you have one choice do this, that’s it.
This is a key of language & story manipulation.
Changing the narrative, framing, structure of language to trap the other person into one choice, but create illusion of choice by giving a 2nd choice, but the 2nd choice is fuzzy, or presented as a horrible, terrible choice.
So the manipulator controls the choice options of the other person, frames it into 2 choices, either/or. But that’s also an illusion. As only one choice is choosable, the other is just barely there to make it look like a choice..
This magic trick and breakdown of persuasion feels like a good illustration of messing with people’s choice perception. Not fully related to Grannon’s theme of discipline & freedom. But as emotional manipulation abuse survivors, we need to get better at recognizing these linguistic traps, in order to have more freedom in future relationships.

A lot of times persuasion or influence is the idea of controlling choices, meaning most people make the assumption that they have free will.
When the choices that are laid out before them A or B, Do you want to try this or this?
But actually you have options C or D, they’re just not on the menu in front of you
So those techniques can be very effective in guiding choices when you bracket what people do.
Anytime you feel like you’re being pulled into a situation, like you’re being persuaded to do something and you’re not quite sure about it.
A lot of times the difficulty in influence or in negotiation or persuasion is when you feel the inability to walk away.
As long as you maintain the ability that you can step back out of the situation you stay in control.
But as soon as you become so invested in or locked into an idea that you find seductive, then that means that you’ve lost control and now the other person is steering the boat.
… that’s back to remembering the misses, most people don’t want to look at the other hand because they’re always focused about the win and they forget about the losses.
